When it comes to selecting a style of kitchen, the country look is still one of the most popular, as it can enhance the architecture of a period property or introduce character into a modern interior. The Main Company incorporates reclaimed and salvaged materials with wood that is over 100 years old. “Recycled timber shelving and reclaimed wagon board worktops add individuality,” explains director Alex Main, “while ensuring a space remains both practical and stylish. Combining mixed materials such as a stainless-steel preparation area and copper accessories will also provide relief from the predominance of wooden worktops and help to give country kitchens a modern update.”
If you have the room, two islands can provide plenty of storage and workspace. Individual cabinetry from British Standard by Plain English costs from £410, with an average sized kitchen priced around £7,000.
Here a large living room was turned into the family’s kitchen by Sutherland Furniture. The islands and units were designed to look more like furniture than kitchen units with a walk-in pantry and larder, with a dresser providing extra storage. Kitchen prices start from £20,000.
The Real Shaker Kitchen by deVOL is shown here in a practical L-shape for easy movement between the cooker and sink. Painted in a rich Pantry Blue with oiled oak worktops, prices start from £8,000.
