Expert's Corner: Country Style Kitchens

Founder Peter Humphrey on why country style kitchens are ever so popular

Q & A – Peter Humphrey, design director and founder of Humphrey Munson

- What makes the country kitchen look so appealing?
For me ‘country style’ is really the ultimate family kitchen — it is homely, warm and inviting. There is a unique charm to the classic English country kitchen that cannot be replicated elsewhere.

- How has it been updated in line with current trends?
The modern country kitchen look is all about open-plan living with cleverly distinguished zones. So, as well as the usual cooking and food prep zone, incorporate a scullery area for washing up and a walk-in pantry for storing dry goods. Integrating appliances behind cabinetry is a great way to keep visual clutter to a minimum and keep the space feeling welcoming.

- Are there any particular materials, colours or finishes that are key?
For a calm and uncluttered feel as you walk into the kitchen, keep the colour palette simple with two paint choices — one base colour and one highlight — and pair this with an accent wood such as smoked oak to bring warmth to the space. Natural materials always work well in a country kitchen so, as well as handmade wooden cabinetry, consider incorporating natural stone flooring.

- Do you think it will ever date?
Not if it’s designed with symmetry, proportion and restraint in mind, as it’s these design principles that ensure a classic kitchen design is future-proofed for years to come.
