Must-Haves: The Modern Global Look

Dreaming of distant travels? It could be all the inspiration you need for your bedroom décor

As the skies brighten and the seasons turn, the one room in the house that can perennially do with a refresh is your sleeping space. And after years of soft, muted fabrics and soothing neutrals, there’s a whole new look coming to the fore in interiors now which works so well for bedrooms and is being dubbed ‘modern global’. Calling for fresh lively patterns, bright colours and new sustainable textiles, as well as lots of your own personality, this might just be the style injection we’ve all been waiting for... “It’s a trend that’s inspired by tribal folk and developed with a modern stylish edge,” says Jane Rockett from Rockett St George. “Think materials such as brass, leather, wood, hand-blown glass and earthenware with gloss-painted finishes. Then add emerald green, burnt ochre and natural hues from tan to cotton in a mixture of textiles and cowhides. We also love faux cactus and succulents to explore the desert vibe, along with ethnic artefact-style ornaments such as dream catchers, hand-painted tiles and bottles.”

However, the look isn’t just confined to Africa and North America. With the use of natural materials such as rattan, cane and upcycled yarns and textiles in fun shapes and designs, we are now seeing a mishmash of what are being called traveller vibes. So, whether it’s a natural longing for holidays and sunshine or just something new in the air, don’t let your imagination hold you back. The future looks bright in bedroom design.

4. So much of what you find on the high street now is inspired by traditional South American, African and Eastern tribal motifs. We love this intricately printed bedding and these kilim carpets.
