It’s difficult to imagine that only a few years ago square white tiles were once our go-to choice for bathroom walls. While white tiles are still a classic choice, today they have been reinvented with mesmerising 3D honeycomb shapes or swirling, undulating wave patterns in a chalky, matt hue or even a contrasting, coloured grout for a modern facelift. This is just the tip of the tiling iceberg and today’s choice of tiles is so exciting, innovative and inspiring, that our bathroom backdrop is often the star of our décor rather than a feature we might previously have wanted to merge invisibly into the background. Think bold, colour-packed Moorish-inspired tiles that can transform an entire shower room or just one zone – in an alcove or behind a basin – not to mention brushed metallics, tweed, tartan and dogtooth patterns, that are more like great panels of fabric and wallpaper than a waterproof covering.
“Wall tiles are an ideal way of introducing a welcome splash of colour and pattern to bathrooms,” says Caroline Gow from Fired Earth. “Even a simple splashback can be enough to brighten up a bathroom or give a scheme a bit of an update without breaking the bank. Blues, greens and zesty citrus shades look particularly clean and fresh with white.”
Think about your bathroom as a whole – where you want your tiles placed, the colour and size – before making a decision, as your final choice can completely change the look and feel of the space.
