Known for his flamboyant fashion creations, he now extends his talents to linen and wallpaper

Julien Macdonald is probably best known for his glamorous fashion collections adored by the rich and famous, including Kylie Minogue, Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian. Having studied Fashion Knitwear at The University of Brighton and receiving his MA at Royal College of Art, it wasn’t long before he was made head designer of knitwear at Chanel and worked for iconic designer label Lagerfield. In 2001, he was named British Fashion Designer of the Year at the Elle Style Awards and appointed as successor to Alexander McQueen as Creative Director of the fashion house Givenchy. In 2006, he was awarded an Order of the British Empire for his services to the fashion industry. Despite his many accolades in the world of fashion however, he has also extended his talents to interiors with a hugely popular homeware range for Debenhams, as well as a wallpaper collection for Graham & Brown. He lives in a Georgian mews house in Notting Hill in West London.

- How does your homeware range reflect your work in fashion?
Whether I’m designing a dress or a piece for the home, I apply the same values. My homeware design is as uncompromising as my fashion collection. I offer glamorous yet functional designs. My homewares are fabulously decadent; they combine richly coloured luxurious fabrics, pleated and folded, delicate jewel embellished cushions and long pile fur throws. It’s all very glamorous, of course, but stylish too.

- Do you apply the same rules to homeware as you do clothes?
I have a design viewpoint that I always stay true to, whether it’s about a dress, jewellery or a cushion. I believe more is more, and you can never have enough sparkle!

- Any tips for some instant glamour to your home?
Absolutely! Just add diamantés, crystal, mirror, lace and beading. A fabulous crystal stacked lamp teamed up with jewelled picture frames or lace votive candles offer a chic and glamorous look. Don’t forget the leopard print; my favourite prints are always animal inspired, I can never get enough of safari prints!

- What’s your top makeover tip?
Focus on the walls. When someone walks into a room their eyes are drawn to the walls first. It is worth investing in standout features, such as statement hanging mirrors. I also try to search for a stunning art piece for the main rooms in my home and position it in full view on entrance for an eye-catching effect.

- Do you have any favourite interior designers?
Obviously, my dear friend Kelly Hoppen, as well as LA-based designers Kelly Wearstler and Martyn Lawrence Bullard.

- Do you have any inspiring ideas for the kitchen or bathroom?
I love the zebra printed glassware from my collection at Debenhams. They are great for when friends come around and are perfect for pre-drinks at a dinner party. The print is fantastic and the glasses add a touch of sophistication to the dinner table.

- What do you suggest to your celebrity clients when they ask for interiors advice?
I tell them that fresh flowers will add instant glamour to any room.

- Do you collect anything?
I collect snow globes and when I became creative director at Givenchy, Alexander McQueen had left me one with a little model of the Givenchy fashion house as a good luck gesture. When I left three years later to create my own collections in London I took it with me to remind me of my time there.
