How to Get Your Home Ready to Host the Best Parties… The Dining Room

From atmospheric lighting to hidden storage, consider all the ingredients for entertaining

We can often get caught up with the smaller details such as table settings and, although these all add a stylish touch, what makes the biggest overall impression when you’re entertaining is the welcoming feeling your guests have when they enter the room. Creating an inviting ambience by choosing suitable furniture will ensure that friends and family will want to make themselves at home. You’d be wise to “choose a dining table with an insertable leaf for a discrete way to add flexibility to your space,” advises Kirsty Whyte, product and design manager at Heal’s. When it comes to styling up your entertaining space, how you choose soft furnishings and consider atmospheric lighting is key. “Add cushions to seats and snuggly blankets or sheepskin rugs to seat backs as they’ll bring instant warmth and comfort to your dining setting. A sea of candles, from tealights to tall to pillar style, stood on candlesticks or simply on a delicate coaster, will produce soft pools of light creating an atmosphere that is intimate yet inviting,” suggests John Sims Hilditch, co-founder of Neptune.

Get the looks…

Rustic Beauty
You can’t really go wrong with a classic refectory dining table such as this rectangular design from Neptune. It’s crafted from solid oak, has sturdy, sculpted baluster legs and can seat up to eight people. The Balmoral table starts from £3,460 and the Arundel bench is from £565.

Sitting in Style
Upholstered bench seating and chairs make for an appealing place to sit and eat, while the addition of mood lighting creates an intimate feeling. The Mid-century expandable dining table (£699) and dining chairs (£249 each), Distressed Arabesque wool rug (from £449) are all from West Elm.

Take A Seat
A gorgeous looking table to serve up a feast on, the Cooks table (£1,795) from Heal’s also has six storage drawers to keep napkins and cutlery. Its solid oak legs are lathe-turned and with a Carrara marble, concrete or oak top.

Room for All
The Wedmore table extends from eight to 14 seats so you’ll have plenty of space to accommodate all of your guests. It’s made from solid oak and walnut (from £5,295) and the Holworth chairs (£495 each) are all from Benchmark.
